Writing & Prepping
Sunday and Monday were for resting, catching up on writing, and getting (actually) prepped to visit Guirdil bothy, which entailed stocking up at the (incredibly well stocked) general store and doing some laundry.
Sticking around town also meant I got to meet lots of great people — folks are always popping in and out of the hostel — and finally getting a chance to take a peek into Kinloch Castle, which has a lot of interesting history wrapped up in it. Originally built as a sort of playboy’s hunting lodge, it was frozen in time because George Bullough died in WWII (he’d been in the calvary in WWI, and was knighted for his service). He and his family are the one’s buried at the mausoleum I saw in Harris!
The castle is currently closed to the public, but I got to peer in the windows and take a few snapshots of the wild stuff inside. And yes, that sign on the door is correct: A few years ago, it served as the island’s hostel(!).
I also explored the area in front of the bunkhouse and looked for shells at low tide.
Then it was time to pack up my gear, make a big dinner, and head to bed early. Tuesday would be my first bothy adventure!
